Greetings fellow Irish Studies Scholars!
Following a series of conversations with a few of you over the past year, I have decided to take the plunge and set up this resources site.
The purpose of the site is very simple: to share knowledge.
It occurred to me that there was no single resource available where people who study all things Ireland could go to find out exactly where the various archives that are relevant to all aspects of Irish studies are located and what they actually hold. So...here we are.
You will be able to find out (a) that the archives exist; (b) where they are; (c) what they hold.
A dedicated email address has been set up irishstudiesresources@gmail.com. If you know of an archive that holds materials which may be of use to your fellow scholars, please do not hesitate to send a quick email to this address so that the information can be updated. Equally, if any information on the site is incorrect, please do let me know.
If you are sending an email to help develop the resource, please include the following information:
1) Where the archive is (city, university, etc)
2) What is held there (the papers you have looked at or are aware of)
3) What subject areas these papers might be relevant to (directly and indirectly)
4) Any additional information that might be useful to someone visiting
I will attempt to keep the site as simple as possible in terms of the information available and will in most cases simply include a link to the relevant archive. Where necessary, I will add in any useful information that is not otherwise available on the archive's own website.
For the time being, the site will remain as a simple blog - you can search by using the good old fashioned "control + f" or "command + f". If we can source some funds down the road, then we might be able to develop it into something a little more sophisticated.
The site isn't designed to do any more than help guide you towards archives that you might not otherwise have been aware of. Please use the links provided to contact any archives you are interested in. The staff there will be able to guide you more precisely as to the breadth of their collections.
Thanks!
